Internet Explorer，简称 IE。原称 Microsoft Internet Explorer，在 7.0 发布时更名为 Windows Internet Explorer。在 IE7 以前，官方中文直译为“网络探路者”，但 IE7 发布时官方便直接称呼为 Internet Explorer。 该网页浏览器基于微软 Trident 内核，该内核引用的所有函数在 MSHTML.dll 文件里。而在 Internet Explorer 9 时，微软向该浏览器引入了一款全新的 JavaScript 引擎：Chakra。
2022年6月15日21:00，微软停止支持Internet Explorer。同年12月，在微软系统推送的更新计划文档中明确表示，微软将于2023年2月14日关闭IE浏览器，取而代之的是Edge浏览器。[1]

1995 年，微软通过给予季度费用和部分收入从 Spyglass 中取得了 Spyglass Mosaic 的源代码和授权，从而使 IE 逐渐成为微软专属软件。
