Microsoft Windows，是美国微软公司研发的一套操作系统，它问世于 1985 年，起初仅为基于 MS-DOS 的外壳，后续的系统版本由于微软不断的更新升级，不但变得更为易用，也逐渐成为大众最喜爱的操作系统。

Windows 采用了图形化操作模式（GUI），比起先前 DOS 键入指令使用的方式更为人性化。随着电脑硬件和软件的更新换代，微软的 Windows 也在不断升级，从架构的 16 位、32 位再到 64 位，系统版本从最初的 [[Windows 1.0]] 到大家熟知的 [[Windows 95]]、[[Windows 98]]、[[Windows Millennium Edition]]、[[Windows 2000]]、[[Windows Server 2003]]、[[Windows XP]]、[[Windows Vista]]、[[Windows 7]]、[[Windows 8]]、[[Windows 8.1]]、[[Windows 10]]、[[Windows 11]] 等操作系统，微软一直致力于 Windows 操作系统的开发和完善。

Windows 在历史上曾出现过的产品可以按不同的产品核心划分为三类，分别为：以 DOS 为基础的 Windows, 以 Windows 9x 为代表的 Windows, 以 NT 为基础开发的 Windows。下面，我们将一一介绍这三种产品。
==以 DOS 为基础的 Windows==
该部分指的是需要自行启动程序管理器，即启动后还需要在 DOS 下输入命令 win 启动的系统，它们没有任务栏、开始按钮和开始菜单。这类产品包括：[[Windows 1.0]]、[[Windows 2.x]]、[[Windows 3.0|Windows 3.x]]、[[Windows for Workgroups 3.1|Windows for Workgroups 3.1x]] 以及 [[Windows for Pen Computing 1.x]]，该部分包含了许多微软过去的风格。

在 [[Windows 3.0]] 之前，Windows 与同时代许多系统一样，没有大范围流行。正是 [[Windows 3.0|Windows 3.x]] 的广泛使用，促成了以后的 Windows 家族的诞生，现在，在 [[Windows 11]] 内，你仍然可以看到 [[Windows 3.0]] 的影子，即或是深入代码的角度也不例外。

==以 Windows 9x 为代表的 Windows==
Windows 9x 是对 [[Windows 95]]、[[Windows 98]]、[[Windows 98|Windows 98 Second Edition]]、[[Windows Millennium Edition]]、[[Windows Codename "Nashville"]] 等以 [[Windows 95]] 作为参考的微软操作系统的通称，与 [[Windows NT 3.1|Windows NT]] 分离于两个开发路线。它是一种多任务图形方式的操作系统。

为了能与 [[Windows 3.0|Windows 3.x]]（MS-DOS）兼容，Windows 9x 的核心里结合了 16 位和 32 位的程序码。

Windows 9x 由于结构上有许多问题，所以稳定性难以保证，而其原因不限于此，与操作系统相关的应用程序的规格、驱动程序和设备的质量也有影响。[[Windows 98|Windows 98 Second Edition]] 是 Windows 9x 中最稳定的版本，也是性能最强的版本。Windows 9x的不稳定因素较多，所以不适用于商业用途的电脑，而当时电脑普及的趋势是 Windows 9x 系列被广泛使用的重要原因之一。

由于[[Windows Millennium Edition]]的失败，微软最终放弃了Windows 9x系列系统的开发，并转向了NT内核。

==以 NT 内核为基础开发的 Windows==
微软公司从数字设备公司（Digital Equipment Corporation）雇佣了一批人员来开发该系列系统。该系统的很多元素带有早期的含 VMS 和 RSX-11 的 DEC 概念。

大卫·卡特勒（David Cutler），NT 项目组建人。他在 DEC 设计了一个全新的计算机系列 Prism，最终项目被 DEC 公司取消，卡特勒离开 DEC，而这也成了 NT 的雏形。经朋友介绍，大卫来到了微软。然后在微软直接建立了 NT 项目，经过 5 年艰苦卓绝的开发，耗资 15 亿美元，由超过 200 名成员开发，最终发布了这个划时代的软件巨作——Windows NT。

Windows NT 是 Microsoft 推出的面向工作站、网络服务器和大型计算机的网络操作系统，也可作为 PC 操作系统使用。它与通信服务紧密集成，提供文件和打印服务，能运行 C/S 应用程序，内置了互联网与内网功能，已逐渐成为企业组网的标准平台。

与一部分人的误解有别，Windows NT 不只包括典型的 NT 家族，即 [[Windows NT 3.1]]、[[Windows NT 3.5]]、[[Windows NT 3.51]]、[[Windows NT 4.0]] 或者 [[Windows Codename "Cairo"]]，在此之后的 [[Windows 2000]]、[[Windows XP]]、[[Windows Vista]]、[[Windows 7]]、[[Windows 8]]、[[Windows 8.1]]、[[Windows 10]]、[[Windows 11]]，大部分 Windows Server、Windows Embedded 以及 Windows Phone 8 及以上都基于 NT 内核。
