Before we start talking about Windows 8.1, I would like to thank Stephen Rose, who has been the editor of the Springboard Series Insider for the past four years. He has done a great job, and I hope to continue to provide you with valuable tips, tricks, and opportunities moving forward. For those of you who don’t know me, here is a little background. I am a Kiwi who has worked across continents—in New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States—as an IT professional for the past 18 years. I joined Microsoft New Zealand eight years ago as an infrastructure consultant, and then moved to Redmond to serve as a lead architect for the Microsoft Consulting Services worldwide client solution team. For the last two years, I have been working with early adopters of Windows 8 and 8.1. I am also a founder of a blog you are most likely familiar with, The Deployment Guys. In short, I have been deploying Windows for a long time and I hope my experiences will help this newsletter continue to bring you great value as a planning, deployment, and support resource. That’s enough about me; let’s talk about what you really want to know about: Windows 8.1. While Windows 8.1 was released to manufacturing at the end in July, I know many of you were awaiting general availability before considering deployment. I am happy to announce that the Windows 8.1 is now available for download—and that now is the perfect time to begin your Windows 8.1 deployment project. Here are four simple tips to get you started: • Download the Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation. This free 90-day evaluation is designed to help you test your apps and hardware on the final version of Windows 8.1 Enterprise, and explore the new features available in Windows 8.1. • Download the latest deployment tools, which include support for Windows 8.1: Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2013, Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (Windows ADK) for Windows 8.1, and System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager. • Head over to Springboard Series for Windows 8.1 on TechNet for all the deployment guidance you’ll need. • Find support, as needed, for your experience in the Windows 8.1 IT Pro Forums. The forums are a great place to solve issues and discuss your experiences with other IT pros and Windows experts. Once you have downloaded the Eval and the latest tools, you might want some deployment and migration advice. Well, you’re in luck. For those of you already running Windows 8, I’ve included some tips on how to upgrade to Windows 8.1. All-around deployment guru, Johan Arwidmark, then details how to create a USB key to deploy Windows 8.1 using MDT 2013. Since security is a major focus of Windows 8.1, and increased user mobility is changing many aspects of security from “nice to have” to “must have,” we also have a great piece from Senior Product Marketing Manager and Windows security expert Chris Hallum on how to get the most out of the security advancements in Windows 8.1 (hint: pay attention to the devices you deploy it on). I hope you enjoy this month’s newsletter and find the content useful. As always, if you have any suggestions on content you’d like to see, or resources you need, please feel free to reach out to me personally or email us at springboard@microsoft.com.
